Getting Started
If you’ve worked out why you want to learn and feel ready to take on a new challenge the next thing to think about is what, where and how to learn.
Why learn?
It’s worth taking time to consider what you want to get out of learning. People decide to learn for lots of different reasons. You might want to:
- Update your skills
- Improve your career prospects or change career altogether
- Develop an interest in a particular subject
- Broaden your horizons
- Satisfy a personal challenge
- Develop your confidence
- Meet new people
If you think clearly about why you want to learn and what your aims and objectives are it will make choosing your learning experience much easier
Will you cope?
If you’ve been away from learning for a while you might be concerned about your study skills. There are lots of people around who can help if you run into difficulties. In communities across Fife and Tayside there are many different individuals working for agencies such as Careers Scotland and your local authority, who can guide and support you through your learning journey.
If you decide to go to college or university your tutor will be happy to help with course-related issues and fellow students can also be a good source of support. For personal issues you are likely to be able to access a counselling or guidance support service. Whatever your worry, staff will be willing to help and the service is free and confidential.
If you still have worries read through our ‘What support is available’ section to find out more.
